Turner Tribute to 9/11
"We the People"
Randy Dean described 5 potential projects to me during lunch one day. When he got to the last one he said that some people had told him the idea wouldn't work. I responded by saying that I thought it would make a terrific painting. The concept was simple, from a distance it would be a painting of an American flag and up close the faces would emerge and be recognizable. The flag itself was the product of hours of flag watching, sketching and photographing. The list of who would be in the flag was expanding daily and continued to grow until the painting neared completion. The people were organized by a timeline within the stripes. The top stripe representing 1775 through 1800, each succeeding stripe adding 25 years. One of the greatest challenges was to fade the people into the flag without loosing their likenesses. The sun breaks through the clouds and illuminates the 412 portraits with a divine backlight. I couldn't help but reflect on the lives of those depicted in the flag and the millions they represented with all their diversity. Representing exactly the ideal which is the American Dream.
